California Japantowns - Exploring the preservation of history, culture, and community...

Fowler

Just south of Fresno, the small town of Fowler was content and self-sufficient in 1941, with both a Buddhist and Christian church, 2 hotels, 1 restaurant, 2 Japanese schools, 5 stores, 3 garages, and strong business associations. Although the storefronts along 9th Street were lost to fire during the war, the Buddhist church was able to rebuild there and a small Japantown was re-established on 4th Street, closer to downtown. Honda Garage, closed in 2008 marked the end of long-time Japanese businesses in Fowler. Only a few scattered forlorn buildings remain.
